PL context notes

A film is a depictions of people, places and events. Like all art it reflects the values and culture of the society that produces them. Circumstances that a film was produced in and that shape its reception are a film's context. Context looks at when, where, how, why the film is set and where it is. The time, place and circumstances. The study of context focuses more on the appropriate context of when the films were made, as opposed to set.

Cultural: general cultural context or a studios style cultural context.
General includes a sense of fashions at the time of the films production. How aspects of the time have influenced the film. The latter might include a studios style or art movement like expression or surrealism.

Political context: An exploration of the impact of the contemporary political climate on the themes of the films, their representations and the production process itself.

Institutional context: Who made the films, what institutional frameworks were they working within?
What funding was available to the filmmakers and how did all of this impact the restrictions placed on the filmmakers.
